Practice Practice

Consensus Building for Liberation

How do we practice practice? Collective decision-making and community accountability are practices central to moving away from individualistic capitalistic norms, and towards transformative justice and liberated worlds. The process requires looking inward and through sustained discussions and relationship building, coming to a consensus on the path forward. The result is deeper trust within the collective and a stronger direction in external engagements, disrupting cultures and practices of colonialism, white supremacy, patriarchy, and ableism embedded within the built environment and its professional practice.

Daarna’s workshop Practice Practice consists of self-reflection exercises and group interactive activities where participants practice practice and depart with an understanding of how to draft implementable and sustainable practice principles, and cultivate a tangible community network to lean on to incorporate these principles in their journey of seeking transformational change within the built environment.

Reflections on Practice Practice

  • Very peaceful and acknowledged the energy of the room while still meeting the goals of the workshop! Really great chance to codify the things I’ve learned so far over the week.

  • The group work was a strength, it was so good to hear others values and thoughts and the final call to be active in our personal lives and to commit in our personal lives the same way we do in our careers was such a good call out!

  • A strength of the workshop was defining colonization / decolonization correctly with relevant examples
